The sports timer was working but only to a pre-set time defined in the arduino Sketch.
After 3 hours of research, trial, error, and successes I have managed to make the time adjustable by the user through simple button presses.
This makes the device even more suitable as a stand-alone accessory.

A quick addition to the code now means that there is a strong visual and audio alert to the end of the function.
